Hong Kong Customs yesterday (February 24) detected a suspected case of smuggling at Lok Ma Chau Control Point and seized 116 smartphones with a total value of about $650,000.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing seven-seater vehicle for Customs clearance at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday. During inspection, officers found the smartphones concealed at the bottom of the instrument panel and inside the toolbox in front of the front passenger seat of the vehicle. The 58-year-old male driver was arrested.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
