Customs officers today (February 23) intercepted at the departure level of Hong Kong International Airport two male passengers departing for Tokyo, Japan, and seized about 2.2 kilogrammes of methamphetamine (Ice). The drugs were concealed inside false compartments in their suitcases and had an estimated market value of about $1.7 million.
The two arrested men, aged 30 and 43, claimed to be a businessman and a worker respectively. They will each be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (February 24).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
