Hong Kong Customs has recently stepped up enforcement actions against smuggling activities via boundary control points and for the first time detected smuggling of milk powder by goods vehicle. Customs officers today (December 24) seized 90 cans of undeclared milk powder in an outgoing cross-boundary lorry at Shenzhen Bay Control Point. The male driver, aged 43, was arrested.
Today morning, Customs officers at Shenzhen Bay Control Point intercepted an outgoing lorry with 318 boxes of electronic appliances declared onboard. After X-ray examination and a thorough inspection by Customs officers, a total of 90 cans of undeclared milk powder were found in the driving compartment of the lorry. In an attempt to evade Customs detection, the driver placed the milk powder inside three nylon bags, which were concealed behind drawn curtains in the driving compartment.
Hong Kong Customs will continue stepping up enforcement against smuggling activities at boundary control points during Christmas and the coming Lunar New year.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, smuggling is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years. Members of the public are urged to report any suspected smuggling activities through Customs' 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
