Hong Kong Customs intercepted a woman in air transit from Johannesburg of South Africa to Cambodia at the departure hall of Hong Kong International Airport this morning (October 17) with the seizure of about three kilogrammes of methamphetamine ("Ice") with an estimated market value of about $2.33 million from the concealed compartment of her luggage.
The 25-year-old woman, who claimed to be a waitress, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (October 18).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
This is the third transnational drug trafficking case detected by Hong Kong Customs in five days. The previous two cases were detected on October 13 and 15 with seizure of 2.3 kilogrammes of cocaine and 715 grams of heroin respectively. Transnational drug trafficking has no geographical limit and becomes international and diversified. In order to effectively combat the transnational drug trafficking, Hong Kong Customs will continue to enlist close co-operation among law enforcement agencies worldwide and strengthen the intelligence exchange with other jurisdictions.
