Hong Kong Customs yesterday (August 27) seized about 1 kilogram of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $840,000 at Hong Kong International Airport.
A 35-year-old female passenger arrived in Hong Kong from South Africa via Singapore yesterday. During customs clearance, the batch of of suspected cocaine was seized from her. The woman was then arrested.
The arrested woman has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (August 29).
Customs will continue to apply a risk assessment approach and focus on selecting passengers from high-risk regions for clearance to combat transnational drug trafficking activities.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
