Hong Kong Customs seized about 2.12 kilograms of suspected cocaine estimated at $2.2 million at Hong Kong International Airport on August 26 and arrested an incoming male passenger.
The male passenger arrived at Hong Kong from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil via Dubai, United Arab Emirates. During Customs clearance, an X-ray check on the computer bag carried by the man revealed suspicious images. In-depth examination led to the discovery of five slabs of suspected cocaine soaked in cotton pads and concealed inside the false compartments of the bag. It is believed that drug traffickers tried to use this concealment method to evade Customs detection.
The arrested man, aged 57 and claiming to be a book seller, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (August 29).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
