Hong Kong Customs foiled a suspected case of smuggling by river trade vessel in Tuen Mun yesterday (December 15) and seized about 3 360 kilogrammes of suspected red sandalwood, endangered species, valued at about $1.3 million.
Customs officers intercepted a river trade vessel off Tuen Mun waters for search yesterday afternoon and found the suspected red sandalwood in the rear crew cabin. Seven men, who were the coxswain and crew members aged from 22 to 47, were arrested. The case is still under investigation.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
