Hong Kong Customs officers yesterday (April 30) arrested two incoming male passengers and seized about six kilogrammes of cocaine, with a value of about $6.21 million, at the Hong Kong International Airport.
The two men were arriving from São Paulo, Brazil via Johannesburg, South Africa yesterday afternoon. Customs Officers found several packs of food dressing amongst their personal belongings during baggage examination. This aroused Customs officers' suspicion and inspected the packs of food dressing thoroughly. Subsequently, Customs officers unveiled the cocaine inside the ten packs of food dressing.
The two arrestees, aged 34 and 68, claimed as renovation worker and paint worker, will each be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. They will appear at Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (May 2).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence and the maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
Hong Kong Customs will continue to keep track of the latest drugs trafficking trend and formulate pertinent anti-narcotics enforcement strategy. The Department will strengthen intelligence exchange with various overseas law enforcement agencies so as to combat transnational drugs trafficking activities collaboratively.
