Hong Kong Customs yesterday (May 13) seized about 20 kilograms of suspected ketamine and a small amount of suspected methamphetamine in an anti-narcotics operation in the Lok Ma Chau-San Tin area. The market value of the seizure was about $2.3 million. Two male suspects were arrested.
Customs officers intercepted two men leaving Mai Po Tsuen in a private car last night. During the interception, the men refused to co-operate with Customs officers and were arrested at the scene. Subsequently, about 270 grams of suspected ketamine were found on one of the arrestees.
Customs officers later searched a domestic unit in the village and found about 20kg of suspected ketamine, a small amount of suspected methamphetamine and a batch of packaging paraphernalia.
The two arrestees, aged 29 and 30 and who claimed to be unemployed, were charged with obstructing customs officers and trafficking in dangerous drugs. They will appear at the Fanling Magistrates' Court tomorrow (May 15).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
