A restaurant and a staff member were fined $15,000 and $5,000 respectively today (March 21) at Eastern Magistrates' Courts for offering to supply food with a false trade description, in contravention of the Trade Descriptions Ordinance (TDO).
Acting on information, Customs officers conducted a test-buy operation at a restaurant in Shau Kei Wan in June 2017 and ordered one Alaskan king crab with a declared weight of seven catties.
Subsequent examination by the Government Laboratory confirmed that the crab was short of weight by about 44 taels, different from what had been declared.
Customs reminds traders to comply with the requirements of the TDO and consumers to procure services at reputable shops.
Under the TDO, any person who supplies or offers to supply goods with a false trade description in the course of trade or business commits an offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $500,000 and imprisonment for five years.
Members of the public may report any suspected violations of the TDO to the Customs 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
