Hong Kong Customs yesterday (December 4) seized 290 suspected smuggled smartphones with an estimated market value of about $2 million at Shenzhen Bay Control Point.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at Shenzhen Bay Control Point for inspection yesterday evening and seized in total 290 smartphones inside the compartment and the spare tyre of the private car. The 64-year-old male driver and 47-year-old male passenger were arrested.
Investigation is ongoing.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
