Hong Kong Customs seized about 3.1 kilograms of suspected 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) with an estimated market value of about $860,000 at Hong Kong International Airport on July 24.
Customs officers inspected an air express parcel arriving in Hong Kong from Malaysia on July 24 and found the batch of suspected dangerous drugs concealed inside packages of curry powder.
After follow-up investigation, Customs officers yesterday (July 25) arrested a 17-year-old man in Tai Po suspected to be in connection with the case.
The arrested man has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at Kowloon City Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (July 27).
Customs will maintain close contact with Hongkong Post and the logistics industries to step up action against drug trafficking through postal parcel or express courier channels.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
