Hong Kong Customs smashed a suspected smuggling case at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday (December 6) and seized a total of 225 smartphones of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5s models, worth about $430,000. The smartphones were concealed inside the metal beam under the tailgate of an outgoing lorry. The male driver, aged 50, was arrested and the lorry was seized.
Customs officers intercepted an empty outgoing lorry for inspection yesterday evening. A total of 225 smartphones concealed inside the metal beam under the tailgate were found after examination.
The driver was arrested. He is on bail pending further investigation.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to import or export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
