Hong Kong Customs seized about 104 kilograms of suspected methamphetamine (ice) worth about $42 million at the Hong Kong International Airport yesterday (December 9).
The suspected methamphetamine was detected in five transit express cargo consignments from the Mainland to Malaysia via Hong Kong. The consignments were declared to contain water filters. In the course of examination, Customs officers observed suspicious X-ray images of the cargoes. The metal cylinders of water filters were cut open and the suspected drugs were found concealed inside. The investigation is under way.
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, the maximum penalty of drug trafficking is life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
A Customs spokesman today (December 10) said that the department would continue to implement its anti-narcotics efforts strenuously with the aid of high-tech equipment, intelligence analysis and risk management, as well as enhanced international co-operation.
