Hong Kong Customs mounted an anti-smuggling operation yesterday (October 25) and seized 887 suspected smuggled smartphones with an estimated market value of about $1 million.
Customs officers intercepted an outgoing private car at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday evening and seized 463 smartphones from a compartment inside the car. Subsequently, Customs officers seized a total of 424 smartphones and packing materials at a vehicle yard in Sheung Shui and an industrial building unit in Kwun Tong.
During the operation, Customs officers arrested four men and one woman aged 17 to 36 and detained a private car for further investigation. Investigation is ongoing.
Smuggling is a serious offence. Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
