Hong Kong Customs yesterday (September 16) seized about 60 kilograms (kg) of suspected worked ivory with an estimated market value of about $1.2 million at Hong Kong International Airport.
Customs officers intercepted two male passengers, 53-year-old and 54-year-old respectively, who arrived from Harare of Zimbabwe via Dubai of the United Arab Emirates at the airport yesterday evening. During Customs clearance, Customs officers found four computer tower cases in their baggage. About 60 kg of suspected worked ivory were found concealed in the false compartment of the computer tower cases.
The case was handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
