Hong Kong Customs yesterday (August 1) seized about 3 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $2.86 million at Hong Kong International Airport.
A male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, via Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, yesterday afternoon. Upon examination of two pieces of his hand-carry baggage, Customs officers found three slabs of suspected cocaine with a weight of about 3 kilograms concealed inside the bottom of the two bags.
The arrested man, aged 47 and claiming to be a worker, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (August 3).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty upon conviction is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
