Hong Kong Customs officers yesterday (September 17) intercepted a female passenger arriving from São Paulo, Brazil in the Customs Arrival Hall of Hong Kong International Airport and seized about 1.7 kg of cocaine with an estimated value of about $1.6 million.
The drugs were concealed inside the hollow part of a metal gear and nine metal rods which were well welded. X-ray images unveiled the suspicious concealment and Customs officers uncovered the concealed drug after cutting open the gear and rods.
The arrestee, aged 24, who claims to be a salesperson, will be charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug and will appear at the Tsuen Wan Magistrates' Court tomorrow (September 19).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, drug trafficking is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is up to life imprisonment and a fine of $5 million.
