Hong Kong Customs yesterday (July 12) seized about 1.4 kilograms of suspected cocaine with an estimated market value of about $1.4 million at Hong Kong International Airport.
A male passenger arrived in Hong Kong from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, via Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, yesterday afternoon. During Customs clearance, Customs officers spotted suspicious X-ray images of his two luggage bags. Thorough examination led to the discovery of a total of about 1.4 kilograms of suspected cocaine concealed in the bags' metal frames.
The arrested man, aged 46 and claiming to be a driver, has been charged with one count of trafficking in a dangerous drug. He will appear at West Kowloon Magistrates' Courts tomorrow (July 14).
Under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance, trafficking in a dangerous drug is a serious offence. The maximum penalty is a fine of $5 million and life imprisonment.
