Hong Kong Customs today (January 18) smashed a smuggling case of milk powder and diapers by an outgoing cross-boundary private car at the Lok Ma Chau Control Point. Customs seized 112 cans of milk powder and eight packs of diapers and the 37-year-old male driver was arrested.
Customs officers inspected an outgoing 7-seater private car at Lok Ma Chau Control Point at noon today. Upon vehicle search conducted on the vehicle, Customs officers found assorted unmanifested cargoes including 112 cans of milk powder, 8 packs of diapers and 3,176 batteries on and under the rear passenger seats with a total seizure value of $286,760.
Customs will continue stepping up enforcement against smuggling activities at boundary control points with regard to the increasing demand for baby food and necessity before the Lunar New Year.
Smuggling is a serious offence. The maximum penalty for smuggling is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years. Public are encouraged to report any suspected smuggling activities through Customs' 24-hour hotline 2545 6182.
