Ng Yuk-lan Noel registered as a bone marrow donor in the early years and was notified by the Hong Kong Red Cross two years ago that she was a complete match for the bone marrow of a patient suffering from acute leukemia. She knew that the chances of finding a perfectly matched unrelated marrow donor were extremely low, so she agreed to donate bone marrow without any hesitation.
Noel said that the donation process was to extract hematopoietic stem cells from the bone marrow in the arm, which was different from the traditional method of extraction in the pelvis. The process did not require general anesthesia. After the surgery, she only needed to rest for a day before returning to work. The impact on the body and daily life was much lower than the traditional extraction method.
Noel's selfless spirit brought the patient back to life. She encouraged more people to register for donating bone marrow, bringing hope to the waiting patients.
Senior Customs Officer, Ms Ng Yuk-lan, donated bone marrow to a patient suffering from acute leukemia, rekindling hope for the patient's life. She was awarded the Heroic Volunteer Award for her spirit of selflessness at the Hong Kong Volunteer Awards 2022.
To commend the Hong Kong Customs Volunteer Team (first left and third right) for actively participating in voluntary work and providing services to people in need from different walks of life, the Volunteer Service Development Council awarded the "Outstanding Volunteer Team" to the Hong Kong Customs Volunteer Team.
