Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected case of smuggled electronic products in refrigerated containers at Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday evening (July 23). A total of 88 mobile phones and 4 412 central processing units (CPUs) with a total value of about $4.5 million were seized.
Customs officers, through risk assessment, intercepted a container truck with two refrigerated containers, declared to be empty, leaving Hong Kong through Lok Ma Chau Control Point yesterday evening. Upon examination, a total of 88 new smart phones and 4 412 CPUs were found concealed in the compartments of the two refrigerated containers.
The electronic products and the container truck with the refrigerated containers were seized by Customs officers for investigation. The 60-year-old container truck driver was arrested and released on bail pending further investigation.
Under the Import and Export Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting unmanifested cargo is liable to a maximum fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
