People are welcome to visit the Customs and Excise Department (C&ED) Centennial Exhibition to be held from September 15-17 at the Exhibition Hall of Hong Kong City Hall, 1/F, Low Block, Central.
The exhibition, aimed to enhance public understanding of Hong Kong's Customs service, is one of the activities being organised by the Hong Kong Customs to celebrate its centenary this year.
Tracing the history back to the founding of the Preventive Service under the then Imports and Exports Department in 1909, the exhibition vividly depicts the evolution of the Hong Kong Customs from a small team of 25 officers to its 5,500 well-trained professional, dedicated customs and trade control officers nowadays.
The exhibition will feature a "time tunnel" and various booths illustrated with historical photos and exhibits. By strolling along the "tunnel", visitors will see the significant stages of development and milestones of Hong Kong Customs over the past 100 years. Eight officers in uniforms of different stages of the Customs will also be there to brief visitors on the history of the department - how it has evolved from a humble "tax collector" to one of the most efficient and highly regarded customs services in the world.
The exhibition will also showcase the department's six major service areas - revenue protection and collection, anti-narcotics investigation, control and enforcement, intellectual property rights protection, consumer protection and trade controls. Another exhibition section will feature the major cases detected by Customs in recent years.
Admission is free. Opening hours of the exhibition will be as follows:
September 15 & 16 | 10am - 8pm |
---|---|
September 17 | 10am - noon |
Apart from the exhibition, the C&ED is also organising a series of events to celebrate its centenary. These include the issuing of a commemorative stamp set with Hongkong Post on September 17, and the production of an eight-episode TV documentary drama series with Radio Television Hong Kong featuring the different facets of law enforcement work of Customs, scheduled for broadcast from October. The department has also supported a local publisher to publish a book giving a historical account of Hong Kong Customs services for the past century in late 2009.
