Hong Kong Customs today (August 25) seized about 23 kilograms of suspected worked ivory with an estimated market value of about $460,000 at the Hong Kong International Airport.
Customs officers intercepted a 22-year-old female passenger who arrived from Harare of Zimbabwe via Dubai of the United Arab Emirates at the airport this afternoon. During Customs clearance, suspected worked ivory wrapped with plastic tape and a tailor-made vest were found in her carry-on baggage. Upon further examination, more suspected worked ivory was found concealed inside the vest. She was subsequently arrested.
A total of about 23 kilograms of suspected worked ivory were seized.
The case has been handed over to the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department for follow-up investigation.
Under the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance, any person found guilty of importing or exporting an endangered species without a licence is liable to a maximum fine of $5 million and imprisonment for two years.
